Variable Reward What distinguishes the Hook Model from a plain vanilla feedback loop is the hook’s ability to create a craving.

Feedback loops are all around us, but predictable ones don’t create desire. The unsurprising response of your fridge light turning on when you open the door doesn’t drive you to keep opening it again and again.

However, add some variability to the mix — say a different treat magically appears in your fridge every time you open it — and voila, intrigue is created.
